Neovascularization of the disc in chronic simple glaucoma.

چکیده
NEW blood vessels appear on the disc in many ocular conditions, but their appearance in glaucoma is infrequent. Duke-Elder (1940) describes the formation of new blood vessels on the retina and the optic disc due to glaucoma as comnmon, and cites several references from the older literature (Von Graefe, 1854; Hormuth, 1903; Bloch, 1906; Axenfeld, 1911; Kraupa, 1915). Fuchs (1951) also mentions the occurrence of newly formed bloodvessels on or close to the optic disc in glaucomatous eyes. But no reference of the condition in chronic simple glaucoma is found in any recent literature. In India neovascularization of the retina or disc has been known to occur in epidemic dropsy glaucoma where the fundus often shows retinal haemorrhage. In the Eye Infirmary, Medical College, Calcutta, where large numbers of glaucoma cases are seen yearly, new vessel formations are seldom encountered in conditions other than vascular glaucoma.

Gonioscopic Features in Patients with Acute and Chronic Angle-Closure Glaucoma
Background: A number of ocular biometric parameters, iris hiotologic and anatomic characters have been suggested as inciting factors for converting patients with narrow angle to angle-closure glaucoma. This study was conducted to determine if there was any goniscopic difference between patients with acute angle-closure glaucoma (AACG) and chronic angle-closure glaucoma (CACG). Methods: ...
متن کاملEvaluation of Retinal Optic Disc Segmentation in Patients with Glaucoma and Comparison with Other Methods of Medical Image Processing
Introduction: Glaucoma is the most common cause of blindness in some countries. In the meantime, the field of retinal image processing has been proposed in order to provide automatic systems for disease diagnosis. Among the methods of medical image processing, image segmentation is a process of identification and change in the display of an image. The objective of this study was to use t...

متن کاملIs the Optic Disc ‘Sinking’ or ‘Cupping’ in Glaucoma?
In 1851, the introduction of the ophthalmoscope by Von Helmholtz revolutionized ophthalmology. With the ophthalmoscope, Von Graefe and others at the time were the first to visualize the optic disc of blind patients in whom the eyeballs were firm but noncongested. They classified this condition as simple glaucoma and labeled the appearance of the optic disc as ‘cupped’. Since then, the term ‘cup...
متن کاملQuantitative relationship between cupping of the optic disc and visual field loss in chronic simple glaucoma.
The extent of cupping was measured from optic disc photographs of 300 patients with ocular hypertension and suspected or established chronic simple glaucoma, and their visual fields were recorded. The incidence of field defects increased as the vertical cup:disc ratio increased, a value of 0-70 for this ratio being a particularly useful guide to the presence or absence of field loss. There was ...
